Yogai Superheroes – Hanuman!

Wednesday’s Yoga Superhero Intensive delved into the character of Hanuman, the monkey god. Hanuman is considered to be the quintessential yogi whose live is a testament to selfless devotion, or “bhakti.”

In this image of him you can see Rama and Sita in his heart.  He is so devoted to their service that when he tears open his chest cavity, it is Rama and Sita who shine out.

There a many many stories about Hanuman’s exploits, many of them contained in the Ramayana, the epic tale of Rama and Sita.  In these stories, we learn of Hanuman’s “siddhis” or supernatural gifts – such as his ability to grow bigger than a mountain or shrink smaller than a fly.  His infamous leap from the subcontinent of India to Sri Lanka is immortalized in the yoga pose hanumanasana.
